CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. - An East Englewood woman was prepared to defend herself Tuesday night when she says a neighbor broke into her house in the middle of the night.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, the 70-year-old victim says she was in her Roberta Drive residence when around midnight she woke to a man standing behind her recliner with his hand over her mouth.
That's when she said she grabbed a knife that she had stashed in her chair due to previous burglaries and stabbed at the man's abdomen and feet. She says she recognized the man as somebody "somebody that lived in the area of her house".
Arriving deputies followed a trail of blood droplets to that man's home a few blocks away, where they found 51-year-old David Szakalos with bandages on wounds in his abdomen.
He was arrested and charged with Burglary, Battery on a Person Over Age 65, and Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer. Szakalos was transported to the Charlotte County Jail where he is being held without bond.
