NORTH PORT - A 12-acre brush fire in eastern North Port has been contained, shortly after it reached the edge of Interstate 75, forcing the closure of one lane between Toledo Blade Boulevard and Kings Highway exits.
North Port Fire Rescue responded at about 5:30 p.m. to two brush fires in eastern North Port. One of the fires, a two acre spread, was put out. However, the other fire had spread to about 12 acres and reached the edge of the Interstate.
That larger fire has since been contained, and the one lane of traffic on I-75 that had been closed is now open.
North Port Fire Department was joined by fire agencies from Charlotte County, Florida Forest Service, Nokomis, Punta Gorda, and Sarasota County. Units will remain at the scene overnight to ensure any remaining hot spots are contained.
No homes were in danger due to the fire.
