Bicyclist dies when run over by back end of tractor trailer

CHARLOTTE COUNTY - A 73-year-old man on a bicycle fatally crashed into the back end of a tractor trailer making a turn in a Port Charlotte neighborhood, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

It happened Tuesday morning just after 9:30am on Capricorn Boulevard.

An FHP report says the tractor trailer was turning left (south) onto Capricorn from Palisade Road when a bicycle ridden by 73-year-old Howard Wisch of Punta Gorda approached the stopped traffic in the northbound lane.

The report says Wisch briefly stopped, then entered the sidewalk and continued north.  His bicycle collided with the left tire of the truck's fourth axle, and Wisch fell between the fourth and fifth axles and was run over by the the truck as it continued its turn.

Wicsch was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.

No charges have been filed.
