PORT CHARLOTTE, FL. - Charlotte County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Port Charlotte man last Friday after he hit a fire lieutenant in the helmet while trying to put out a fire behind the man’s home.
Charged with Aggravated Battery on a Firefighter with a Deadly Weapon (Shovel), and Preventing or Obstructing Extinguishment of a Fire was 44-year-old Gregory Sean Turner.
The Charlotte County Fire Department responded to a fire call in the backyard of Turner’s home, and as the Lieutenant walked around the house, Turner came out, began yelling profanities, and telling him to get off his property. The fire was about 6 to 8 feet in diameter. Springs to a mattress, blinds, a ceiling fan and other home appliances were on fire.
Turner was advised of the illegal burn and a fire hose was brought around to extinguish the fire.
The Lieutenant went back to get a smaller hose to extinguish the fire and when he returned he saw Turner adding more items to the fire. Turner grabbed a shovel and raised it over his head and began walking toward the firefighter in an aggressive manner. The Lieutenant, fearing he was going to be struck with the shovel, sprayed Turner with the hose and Turner fell to the ground. Turner got up, began swinging his arms and hit the Lieutenant in the helmet with the shovel.
Deputies were called and when they arrived, saw Turner waving his arms, yelling, and walking in an aggressive manner. A deputy deployed a Taser and then handcuffed him. Turner uttered that he started the fire and it was his.
