MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A severely injured sea turtle is safe after being rescued by Coast Guard crew members off the coast of Manatee County Sunday.
A good Samaritan notified Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector St. Petersburg, Florida, of an injured sea turtle with a a spear penetrating the shell and was unable to dive under the surface because of air leaking into the shell.
Coast Guard Station Cortez crew members were launched and arrived on scene with the sea turtle off Longboat Pass, which was able to be safely recovered without further injury. The turtle was transferred to Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota in stable condition.
Officials at the aquarium will examine the turtle to determine the extent of its injuries.
