Sarasota ranks high in national magazine

SARASOTA, Fla. - The national magazine "Where to Retire" has listed Sarasota among the most dynamic locales for walkable living.

Sally Kastes -- and her two dogs -- moved to downtown Sarasota a few months ago, and she calls it one of the best decisions she's made.  "I have to be honest with you, I park the car on Friday after work, and don't touch it again until Monday. Everything is close," she says.

Each day, countless pedestrians work, shop and eat downtown, including Tony Souza, head of the Downtown Sarasota Alliance.  "I live downtown, my car is three years old and has 12,000 miles on it," he said.

Other cities on the list are:

Decatur, Georgia

Charlottesville, Virginia

Providence, Rhode Island

Tuscon, Arizona

Boulder, Colorado

Ashland, Oregon

Belllingham, Washington

So a nice honor for Sarasota, but with the area trying to market itself as a vibrant business destination, does an honor from a magazine with the word 'retiree' in the title help that cause?

Even though Sarasota County does lead the nation in the 65+ demographic per capita, Souza says another number is important to note as well.

"The median age is down to 45...I think it's a good balance...it's a city of young people," Souza said.

Young or older, walking in Sarasota seems to get high marks.
