PETA complaint causes Westfield Mall to remove vending machine fish tank

SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) - Animal activist group, PETA, suggested that the Westfield Mall remove a vending machine that feeds fish and the mall has complied with their requests.

The Westfield Mall had a 'Feed the Fish and Make a Wish' vending machine that allows visitors to pay to dispense food into a fish tank.

According to PETA, the vending machine was harmful to the fish, because it had no way to determine how much the fish were being fed.

PETA says that fish that are overfed or underfed can be deadly.

"Scientists have shown that fish become depressed from a lack of space, stimulation, and adequate enrichment, just as humans do," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "More than 620 shopping malls nationwide now prohibit or restrict animal exhibits, and PETA is thanking Westfield for an on-trend decision that will spare fish needless suffering."

PETA showed their appreciation by sending Westfield Mall a box of fish-shaped chocolates for removing the vending machine.
