FORT PAYNE, Ala. (WAAY)-A Dekalb County teenager accused of shooting his own mother to death was in court Friday morning.
The 14-year-old boy went before a judge in juvenile court for his preliminary hearing. Deputies covered his face to conceal his identity.
Prosecutors filed a motion requesting that the teen be tried as an adult.
Sources tell WAAY 31 the 14 year old shot his mother at their Mount Vernon home Tuesday on County Road 99. The shooting reportedly stemmed from an argument over her son's cell phone bill.
38 year old Kelena Hicks was flown to Huntsville Hospital where she later died. Neighbor Carolyn Parker is praying for the victims family. Parker and many others can't believe this crime happened.
"You just wonder where his mind was? In my heart I just believe they were in an argument and maybe she was trying to take the gun away from him because I can't believe he would just point blank shoot her" Parker said.
Sources say that the murder weapon is a 22-caliber rifle. Visitation for Kelena Hicks is friday night from 6-8 at Perry Funeral Home in Centre. No trial date has been set.
