NEW YORK, NY (WWSB) - Update: Police have charged Rojas with murder and attempted murder after he plowed his car through a crowd of pedestrians, killing one and seriously injuring many more.
Rojas claims he was "hearing voices".
A speeding vehicle crashed into a crowd of pedestrians in Times Square Thursday afternoon.
About 20 pedestrians were hit and are being treated for injuries. One has died.
A NYC official says it looks like an accident. The driver has been taken into custody after attempting to flee the scene on foot. The driver was identified as Richard Rojas, 26. Rojas is a Bronx resident, U.S. citizen and Navy veteran, the mayor said. NYPD Commissioner Jame O'Neill said Rojas had two prior DUI arrests.
New York Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said four people were critically injured but were expected to survive. Police and fire officials closed off an area of several blocks
