Military veteran opens fire on trooper in Oregon

OREGON - Police in Oregon released this dashcam footage Thursday of a harrowing traffic stop.

On August 29, State Trooper Matthew Zistel pulled over 34-year-old John Van Allen, a military veteran. Allen was on a road trip with his three children, each between the ages of ten and 15.

Allen got out of his car wearing military fatigues with one hand behind his back. The trooper repeatedly asked Allen to get back in his car and then he opens fire. The trooper returned fire, hitting Allen, who then got back in his car and drove off.

According to a press release from Sherman County District Attorney, Allen was found dead half-mile down the road with a single gunshot wound to his chest.

The children were not harmed.

State Trooper Zistel was shot on the right side of the chest, but he did not suffer serious injuries.

The D.A. ruled the trooper's use of deadly force was justified.
