WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama's choice to lead the Energy Department favors an all-of-the-above approach that includes natural gas as a "bridge fuel" to help the country develop clean energy.

Ernest Moniz, a physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, leads the MIT Energy Initiative, a research group that works on projects to reduce greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

Obama says Moniz knows the U.S. can produce more energy and grow the economy "while still taking care of our air, our water and our climate."

Obama nominated Moniz on Monday, along with two others named to top-level positions. Gina McCarthy, an assistant EPA administrator, was named to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, while Sylvia Mathews Burwell, a former budget official who now leads the Wal-Mart Foundation, was named budget director.
