In the moments before he was struck and killed by a SEPTA train while walking the tracks Monday afternoon, an Abington man was text-messaging his friend about meeting at a nearby Wawa, township police said Tuesday.
Andre Washington, 20, a resident of the Madison Manor Apartments, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred about 4:20 p.m. Monday about a half-mile east of the Old York Road overpass.
According to police, Washington was walking westbound while text-messaging his friend as the outbound SEPTA train was rounding a curve.
Police said the engineer reported that he had seen the man, sounded the train’s horn and locked the brakes, but Washington neither turned to see the train nor acknowledged its approach.
Washington was supposed to meet his friend at the Wawa convenience store at Old York Road and Rodman Avenue, police said.
The accident suspended service on SEPTA's West Trenton Line for about two hours, an agency spokeswoman said.
