The Manatee branch of the NAACP held an event Saturday morning in recognition of Black History Month. Singing and dancing kicked off this year's annual MLK Commemorative Breakfast. The event at The Dream Center in Bradenton awarded its first Drum Major for Change to Mrs.Joanne Dick. Dick was recognized for her efforts behind the scenes through the years.

The president of the NAACP Manatee Branch, Susie Copeland, says events like the breakfast are important and we can not ignore the things going on in our community. Copelannd says it's not just African Americans but many poor people or people of color that are being left behind. Copleland wants the community to know that the NAACP is still alive and thriving on the Suncoast.
