MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A private workshop will look to address the disposal of polluted water from the Piney Point phosphate plant in Manatee County.

About 2 million gallons of contaminated water have formed in lakes on the property. Taxpayers inherited piney point in 2001 when the former owner went bankrupt and abandoned the plant.

Last year, Manatee County Utilities applied for a permit to inject the water into the state's aquifer, but some farmers fear it will taint their crops.

The workshop on the issue will take place at 1:30pm Tuesday at the County Commission chambers in Bradenton.

ABC 7's Bobeth Yates will take a closer look at this story tonight on ABC 7 News at 5 & 6.

NOTE:  This story has been updated from a previous version which incorrectly stated the workshop was open to the public. It is not. ABC 7 regrets the error.
