BRADENTON, Fla. - One of the developers of the show "The Simpsons" is the latest addition to a list of people offering rewards to help find who is responsible for splitting open the head of a pit bull in Bradenton this week.

Axel the dog was found wandering along a Bradenton street earlier this week with a gaping wound to his head, believed to be caused by an axe or hatchet.

After hearing about Axel's story, Tampa radio show host "Bubba the Love Sponge" stepped up, offering $1,000 to the $500 reward offered by Animal Network, Inc.  Soon after that, Tampa philanthropist and medical referral service mogul Gary Kompothecras matched Bubba's $1,000 reward.

Now, producer and writer Sam Simon is adding $10,000 to the reward.  Simon, who helped develop the show The Simpsons and worked on Taxi, Cheers, and the Drew Carey Show, appeared on Bubba's show Friday morning to make the announcement.

That brings the total reward offered to $13,600.

“If this doesn’t flesh out this dirt bag, nothing will” said Bubba The Love Sponge Clem.  “Sam Simon is a great man.”

Axel is recovering at a local vet's office while Animal Services works to find him a new home.

Anybody with information on this case is asked to call Manatee County Animal Services at (941) 742-5933, ext. 8314, or the Manatee County Sheriff's Office at (941) 747-3011.
