MANATEE COUNTY – Two students received minor injuries Tuesday when the school bus they were on collided with a passing fire truck.

It happened around 3pm Tuesday on Rye Road in eastern Manatee County.  According to Florida Highway Patrol, a fire truck had its lights and sirens on and was heading southbound on Rye Road near 18th Place East.

In an attempt to pass yielding vehicles in the southbound lane, the fire truck entered the northbound lane. That's when 73-year-old school bus driver James McKinney failed to observe or hear the fire truck and attempted turning left onto 18th Place East.  The left front of the bus struck the right side of the emergency vehicle.

Two of the 47 students on the bus were transported to Lakewood Ranch medical Center with minor injuries.
