BRADENTON - The teachers and parents of Rowlett Elementary School have spoken. They want to become a charter school.
Last week, parents and teachers voted on whether to become Manatee County's first charter school conversion. Tonight at a special assembly, school administrators tallied up those votes, and they were overwhelmingly in favor of making the switch.
It is welcome news to parents who worried the school district's budget problems would threaten Rowlett's magnet programs – which involve the performing and visual arts.
The next step in the conversion process is to submit an application to the Manatee County School Board.
After that, board members will have 60 days to approve or deny the application.
