BRADENTON - It's been a tough week for the Manatee County Sheriff's Office. Last week, a veteran sheriff's lieutenant was arrested on charges of child molestation. And now another deputy is facing DUI charges after allegedly driving drunk and causing property damage.
Deputy Kevin White has been with the department since 2008, but this isn't his first time getting in trouble.
Deputy White has been placed on paid administrative leave after the alleged drunk driving incident that occurred early Sunday morning. The report states that White, who was off-duty at the time, ran over a street sign. A responding deputy stated he could smell "a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from within the vehicle."
White was arrested after refusing both a field sobriety test and a breath test. He is now the subject of an Internal Affairs investigation by the sheriff's office.
And it turns out White was the subject of a similar investigation three years ago after an incident that got him banned for life from Tropicana Field.
Back in 2010, White was the subject of another investigation by Internal Affairs. According to a report obtained by ABC 7 News, White was intoxicated, rude, and disruptive at a Tampa Bay Rays game.
A responding officer from the St. Petersburg Police Department is quoted in the report stating that the only reason White was not arrested at the time was because of his employment with the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
White was kicked out of Tropicana Field and subsequently banned for life. The investigation determined White did commit conduct unbecoming of a deputy.
As for White's current troubles, the sheriff's office isn't talking. He has been charged with DUI, but the sheriff's office would not provide a booking photo of him to the media.
The Manatee County Sheriff's Office is not a unionized force. Spokesman Dave Bristow says that any representation White chooses for either the Internal Affairs investigation or the criminal case will be up to him.
