SARASOTA--The message to Congressman Vern Buchanan Saturday morning was clear: stay out of Syria.

"In the last two to three weeks when this whole thing came up about Syria, we've had over two to three thousand calls and emails into our office," said Buchanan, " I' say 90-95 percent against it."

Lobbing questions and concerns like a firing squad, those gathered at Buchanan's town hall meeting weren't backing down.

"I believe that we do not belong getting into the Syrian war," said Martin Monaco.

But Buchanan has never needed convincing when it comes to Syria.

"My point is we can't be the worlds policeman," said Buchanan, "we have to be able to do these things in terms of the international community."

Some disagree. Like it or not, they say, the U.S. has an obligation to get involved.

"Contrary to what most people think, we are the world's policeman, we might as well admit it and cowboy up," said Richard Palmer, a Sarasota resident, "there's advantages to being policeman of the world."

Buchanan maintains there's just too much at stake, and the problem is too murky. He says Congress should focus its efforts here at home.

"There's a lot of uncertainty around this issue, I think they need to work it out, we need to be focusing our energy and our time in the Congress, on working for the American people," said Buchanan.

As the meeting began, word spread of the impending deal laid out between Russia and the U.S. about handling Syria's chemical weapons. While early in that process, the Congressman is skeptical.

"I don't trust the Russians, but at the end of the day it is a deal," said Buchanan.
