BRADENTON, Fla. - Best-selling author James Patterson held a book signing inside a new Bradenton business Wednesday night, while protesters outside made accusations about his business interests.
Patterson is widely known for his Alex Cross series. Wednesday night's event wasn't at a book store, but at a new gym on Cortez Road West.
Patterson's sister Mary Ellen owns Inches Fitness and Patterson is an investor in the business. Because of that, a group of contractors protested his visit, saying they weren't paid entirely for their work.
“About a year ago, we entered into a contract agreement with a general contractor to do work here at the building. It was a complete gut and remodel of the facility, and somewhere along the way there were some change orders that came through, and some discrepancies happened between the general contractor and the owners. And in doing so, it turns out that a lot of the subs ended up not getting paid fully for their work out here,” says subcontractor Rich Walker.
The attorney for the Patterson's reached out to ABC 7. He claims the allegations are false; that they paid the amount of the construction contract and that the general contractor did not fully pay the subcontractors.
