One dead in small plane crash in Manatee County

MANATEE COUNTY - One person is dead after a small plane crashed into a field in northern Manatee County Monday afternoon.

It happened around 4:35pm near the north end of Grass Farm Road, about a mile north of Buckeye Road, roughly halfway between Airport Manatee and Interstate 75.

According to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, the plane is described as a homemade experimental untralight that took off from Airport Manatee. witnesses tell ABC 7 that they saw smoke from the plane before it went down.

The pilot, 82-year-old James Clendenon, was dead at the scene when deputies arrived.

The FAA does not plan to investigate.
