MANATEE COUNTY - Backyard chickens are getting closer to becoming legal in Manatee County.

After hearing arguments for and against backyard chicken coops, county commissioners are now asking staff members to write up plans for an ordinance legalizing the practice.

Right now, it is against county rules.

The Holmes Beach City Commission recently passed a measure to allow city residents to keep chickens, as long as they meet certain criteria.

The county commission has not set a date for their vote.
