MANATEE COUNTY - A strange site along U.S. 41 in Palmetto Monday morning, as drivers shared the road with a cow as it strolled more than 4 miles through Manatee County.

A motorist sent in pictures showing the cow just walking down the highway.

According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, the animal somehow escaped from a field and was first reported walking near the 4700 block of Ellenton-Gillette Road. A patrol unit was unable to corral the cow as it continued down the road, eventually heading west on U.S. 41.

The deputy was eventually able to block the cow inside the Overpass Apartments on 10th Street West in Palmetto.

The animal was darted for safety reasons and has been returned to its owner.
