ANNA MARIA ISLAND - Heavy rains pounded the area for much of the day Tuesday, causing flooding all around the Suncoast. As usual, Anna Maria Island and its neighbors are taking the brunt of the flooding and drivers are being urged to stay off the roads.

Tuesdays morning, people were wondering how much worse it could get. Then in the afternoon it got worse. That's when the tide rolled in, complicating an already challenging problem.

Throughout the commute hours, everybody is being warned to slow down and take things easy, as this could be the situation for the next couple of days.

"I didn't think it was going to get this bad," said Robert and Susan Dodd, visiting from the U.K. By late morning on Tuesday, signs were popping up all around Anna Maria Island. "It’s pretty deep, its deep…my feet are constantly wet."

For locals, flooding like this is nothing new. But for those that are new, it’s been quite a sight.

"I've only worked here since April, so this is my first experience with the flooding. So I'm kind of amazed at how flooded the island actually is," said Caroline Franco.

Officials say during rain like this, the area's drainage system just can't keep up.

So far, no roads have been closed and no major accidents have been reported. Cops though are asking drivers to consider whether or not they really need to make a trip out.

"To stay off the roads if you can. If you don’t have a high profile vehicle, you're going to have trouble in some areas. We do have flooding…we have some areas of deep water," says Chief William Tokajer of the Holmes Beach Police Department.
