MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Manatee County school district Superintendent Rick Mills and District 5 candidate Mary Cantrell have been holding text message discussions about returning Cantrell to her former job at Manatee Technical Institute (MTI).

Rumors have been circulating about such discussions, with some accusing Mills of offering Cantrell her MTI position back if she withdrew from the school board race.

Mills says the text messages sent between he and Cantrell were meant to explore the option of Cantrell returning to MTI, but that no job offer was made.

Cantrell signed an affidavit stating that Mills did not tell her she could have her job back if she dropped out of the board race.
