Manatee released back into the wild

JACKSONVILLE, FL (WWSB) - A rescued manatee has been returned to the wild.  Vilanzo was released by his caretakers from the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens.

Ten members of the zoo staff carried the 900 pound, 10 foot manatee on a stretcher to the water at an intracoastal waterway boat ramp.

Zoo curator of mammals Craig Miller says the young adult manatee recovered quickly during his eight weeks of care. He says Vilanzo might have suffered a head wound from a boat.  Miller says Vilanzo was underweight and suffering from cold stress, dehydration and exhaustion when rescued on March 18 at Vilano Beach.
