SARASOTA, Fla. -- The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office has arrested the suspect wanted for robbing a Venice bank on November 2, 2013.

That November afternoon, a man wearing an Albert Einstein mask entered a Venice Wells Fargo Bank, demanded money and left with the cash. A customer pursued the suspect but was sprayed with mace.

The suspect initially fled on a bicycle and then left the area in a car driven by an accomplice. Detectives obtained the mask as evidence and witnesses reported the suspect’s description.

This month, detectives identified Matthew Maxwell, a Tampa resident, as the suspect in this case.

Detectives obtained a warrant for Maxwell and he was arrested yesterday in Atlanta by the Atlanta Police Department on the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office warrant.

Maxwell is charged with one count of felony Bank Robbery and one count of Battery. Elsewhere, Maxwell is a suspect in more than a dozen other crimes and additional charges are pending.

The Sarasota PD was working in conjunction with the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force and Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office on this case.
