SARASOTA CO., Fla. (WWSB) -- An 80-year-old convicted felon from Missouri was arrested by Sarasota County Sheriff's after detectives found a firearm and ammunition in his heavily blood-spattered car.
On Tuesday, deputies responded to a report of a vehicle crash in the 6000 block of Clark Road around 9:30 p.m. According to the caller, the suspect was standing outside his home next to a vehicle covered in blood.
When deputies arrived, they made contact with 80-year-old Leslie Achter who claimed he was a passenger in the car and that the driver had fled the scene after hitting a deer.
Achter only had a cut on his arm and while he was being treated a firearm cylinder pin fell out of his pocket.
According to the Sheriff's report, Achter got the revolver from his grandmother and he admitted to having the rest of the firearm hidden underneath the spare tire inside the vehicle.
Deputies found the revolver with the serial numbers removed and the barrel cut off.
A forensics team tested the blood that was found in the car and confirmed that the blood was not from an animal.
Achter is charged with Possession of a weapon by a Convicted Felon and Possession of an Altered Firearm. He remains in custody on $8,000 bond.
Achter's criminal history revealed past convictions for Manslaughter, Aggravated Stalking and Escape.
The incident is under investigation and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
