Sarasota, Fla. -- A group of local veterans will join thousands of others to place wreaths on tombstones of local veterans.
It's part of the national "Wreaths Across America" program, where volunteers and veterans place sponsored wreaths on tombstones in a demonstration to pay tribute to those who have served in the military in the United States.
All ceremonies take place on Saturday, December 14.
Last year, volunteers were able to place thousands or wreaths across Florida with nearly 200 wreaths at the Oakland Cemetery in Tallahassee alone. Each wreath was sponsored by a donation.
Wreaths Across America began in 1992 when the Worcester Wreath Company had an overrun of wreaths and got permission to lay the wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery. That year they laid 5,000 wreaths. Last year more than 500,000 wreaths were laid at national cemeteries nationwide.
