SARASOTA - Traffic came to a halt Thursday night on U.S. 41 in Sarasota after a car struck a pedestrian crossing the busy roadway.

It happened right around 8pm on U.S. 41 at 18th Street, that's near the La Quinta Inn on the North Trail.

A southbound vehicle struck a pedestrian, later identified as 55-year-old Dorothy M. McMahon of Sarasota, as she was crossing N. Tamiami Trail from east to west.

Police say it is possible she was staying at a hotel in the area of the crash. She was air-lifted to Blake Medical Center where she is currently in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle was not cited for the crash and did not report any injuries at the scene.

The southbound lanes of N. Tamiami Trail were closed for 2 hours while the Sarasota Police Dept. Traffic Unit conducted the traffic crash investigation.

Anyone with information pertaining to the crash or the pedestrian should contact Officer Forrister at (941) 539-4721.
