Winter storm shuts down major Southeastern airports

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Attention travelers: If you're scheduled to fly out of the Suncoast today, you better check with your airline before heading to the airport. A severe winter storm is wreaking havoc on transportation throughout the Southeastern United States, forcing the closures of some major airline hubs

All flights in and out of Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (the busiest in the nation) and Charlotte, NC's Charlotte Douglas International Airport have been cancelled for today, which may cause other disruptions to the nation's already overloaded air traffic control system.

Things will only get more difficult tomorrow, when the storm is expected to hit the Northeast, resulting in significant cancellations of flights to and from the New York area.

Locally, both Sarasota Bradenton International and Tampa International are posting updates to their websites. It's recommended that travelers check out those sites before heading to the airport.
