SARASOTA, Fla. - All three area Spring Training facilities have been nominated in a USA Today web poll to pick the best Spring Training ballpark in the Major Leagues.
Now through March 24th, fans can cast their vote among 20 ballparks at the 10best.com website. Supporters can vote once per day, per category.
Among the nominees are:
Bradenton's McKechnie Field, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Originally built in 1923, McKechnie Filed has hosted the Pirates since 1969. The park just underwent new "fan friendly" renovations, adding more seating and and outfield boarwalk.
Sarasota's Ed Smith Stadium, home of the Baltimore Orioles. After the Reds left Sarasota in 2009, the Orioles moved in the following year. The next year, the stadium underwent extensive renovations, adding improved shading, an upper concourse, and an outfield dining area.
Port Charlotte's Charlotte Sports Park, home of the Tampa Bay Rays. This stadium sat empty for 7 years after the Texas Rangers left in 2002. In the down time, the stadium was fully renovated in time to welcome the Rays in 2009.
Nominees were selected by USA Today sports writer Bob Nightengale.
