SARASOTA, Fla. -- The "Wallenda – Beyond Belief Viewing and Street Party" was held on Sunday, June 23 from 7 to 11pm at downtown Sarasota's Mattison's City Grille.
The street party was free and open to the public on Lemon Avenue between Main Street and First Avenue in front of Mattison's and featured a variety of circus performances by international circus artists and youth performers from the Sailor Circus. There were multiple circus activities including balloon making, face-painting, and wire walking in a kid-friendly area just off the ground. There were also street vendors, a raffle with prizes, and an entertaining live auction conducted by Bob Harrigan that raised $2,800. Two auction winners bought themselves dinner with Nik Wallenda and Paul Mattison along with eight friends.
ABC 7 and MySuncoast.com had a booth at the event and we passed out plenty of hand fans since the air was a little warm and humid. Don Brennan, Linda Carson, Trevor Shirley, Alix Redmonde, and Josh Taylor were among the station personalities present there meeting and greeting our viewers on the Suncoast.
Bob Harrigan and Scott Dennis were the main MCs of the event and even Chef Paul Mattison took his turn on the microphone to address the crowd.
Lauren Dorsett checked in briefly with the gathered audience via telephone and gave us a quick update just before Nik stepped on the wire.
Finally, there was the big projection screen featuring Nik Wallenda crossing the Grand Canyon. There were some tense moments and wild cheering when he finally made it across. His total time on the wire was just short of 23 minutes.
