CLEARWATER, Fla. -- A Venice High School student who lost her hand in a watercraft accident three weeks ago has new hope, thanks to a Hollywood movie.
Rachel Nowak recently met Winter the dolphin, the star of the movie A Dolphin’s Tale. The doctor that fit Winter with its prosthetic flipper will fit Nowak with a prosthetic hand.
Dr. Dan Strzempka from Sarasota met with the young teen shortly after her accident to prepare her for the new hand.
This week, Nowak got a chance to meet Winter up close. It was part of a planned visit to Clearwater’s Marine Aquarium, put on by the foundation created by former Tampa Bay Buccaneers fullback Mike Alstott.
The teen spent two hours with Winter, feeding the dolphin and watching how the prosthetic was attached.
Nowak's new hand should be ready within a month.
ABC 7's Linda Carson will have more on Rachel's story Friday on ABC 7 News at 6.
