VENICE, Fla. - The Venice city council will consider consolidating its city and county fire service in an effort to cut costs.

Council member Bob Daniels has suggested the city consider the plan. He argues that the city department is in financial crisis because of pension debt.

The pension is more than $21 million in the red.

Also, the city oversees a $7 million fire department budget that responds to fewer than 60 fires a year.

Other council members agreed to discuss the plan at a later date.
