Venice set to shut down city emergency dispatch service

SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. -- Starting tonight, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office will officially take over 911 dispatch services in Venice.

Previously, all emergency calls in Venice were handled by the city. But to cut costs, the city turned over dispatch services to the county.

Venice expects to save about half a million dollars a year with the merger.

Some who are opposed to the change voiced their concerns that county dispatchers won't be as familiar with Venice city locations, which could delay their response.

The City of North Port is also considering the switch over.
