Venice educator named County's Teacher of the Year

SARASOTA- Taylor Ranch Elementary science teacher Lisa Figueroa was named Sarasota County Teacher of the Year Thursday night in a ceremony at Laurel Oak Country Club.

Figueroa was chosen from among three finalists, including Ian Ackroyd (Venice Middle School) and Gina Barresi (Sarasota High School).

Figuero will represent the school district at the Florida Department of Education-Macy's Teacher of the Year gala, and serve as the community spokesperson for the teaching profession throughout the next academic year.

The Education Foundation of Sarasota presented Figueroa with a $1,5000 cash award and an additional $2,500 from Sunset Chevrolet Buick GMC.  The other two finalists received $500 each from the Foundation and the auto dealership.
