Venice Declares Voluntary Evacuation for the Island

Venice, FL (WWSB) - The City of Venice declared a voluntary island evacuation Friday morning in advance of Hurricane Irma.

According to the city of Venice, Brookside Middle and Booker High schools in Sarasota and Woodland Middle and Atwater Elementary in North Port are expected to be shelters opened first. 

Keep in mind, the Venice Community Center, although designated as a shelter for Sarasota County, will not be open for this storm.

Anyone who does leave should take 2 forms of identification to get back on the island after the storm. Suggested form of ID are a driver's license and utility bill.

The South Jetty/Humphris Park are being closed Friday morning.

Bags and sand are still available for citizens at two locations:

• At Avenue Des Parques and West Venice Ave. (behind Venice City Hall)

• At the Wellfield police range off Pinebrook Road

Shovels are provided and there is a 10 bag per person limit. Public Works will make sand available as long as supplies last.
