SARASOTA, FL. – Detectives with the Sarasota Police Department are looking to identify a vehicle burglar who was caught on camera attempting to break into vehicles earlier this week.

On Monday, around 11:49 p.m., a man on a bicycle was seen on camera riding in the 2600 block of Nancy Street in Sarasota. He rode his bicycle past a home, turned around, parked the bicycle at the edge of the driveway and walked through a neighboring yard and into the garage area.

He was then seen walking out of the garage area, down the driveway and across the street to another home. In a different camera angle from the home across the street, the man is seen walking up to a vehicle, pulling on the door handle and then walking away.

A victim called officers Tuesday morning and told them that when she walked out to her vehicle she observed the driver’s door, rear left door and the hatchback were open. Inside the vehicle, the glove compartment and center console were open and then contents were scattered in the vehicle. Clothing the victim had just purchased was stolen from the vehicle which was unlocked at the time of the burglary.

“We want to encourage residents and visitors in Sarasota to lock it up. Locking and securing your vehicles, homes and patios are crucial. Don’t make a crime of opportunity easy for a criminal by not locking up,” said Lt. Pat Ledwith, Criminal Investigations Division, Sarasota Police Department.
