Update: US 41 in Sarasota is back open after a water main break

7:30 Update: US 41 is back open in Sarasota after a water main break forced officials to close it down on Thursday afternoon.


4 p.m. Update: The general manager for the City of Sarasota said they will not have US 41 reopened before rush hour. They likely will be done by early evening, he said.

Workers were paving the roads by 3:30 p.m., but it was slow going. 

All southbound and northbound lanes remain closed between Myrtle Street and Dr Martin Luther King Way.

The crews reported the source of the problem was a 50-year-old pipe that affected an 8 inch asbestos line. The crews were awaiting on asphalt delivery to complete repairs Friday morning.


The city of Sarasota reported on their Twitter page that they hope to reopen US 41 by mid-afternoon Friday.  Now it appears likely it will be early evening before traffic can resume.

All lanes of North Tamiami Trail are closed at 32nd Street due to a water main break.
