SARASOTA - The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man who they say stole keys off a key rack at a YMCA to unlock vehicles and steal the victim’s belongings.
24-year-old Peter Strohminger of Sarasota has been charged for incidents on June 4th and June 6th at the YMCA on Potter Park Drive in Sarasota. Each time, Strohminger was seen on video checking in at the front desk, but instead of working out he walked to the weight room key rack, took a set of keys and headed outside.
In the first instance he broke into a car belonging to 19-year-old Jackie Giannini and stole her wallet. Giannini had left her keys on the key rack.
"At first, I thought someone had mistakenly taken my keys," said Giannini."
Giannini says she has learned the lesson to always keep your belongings near you at all times.
"Even in a place that appears to be a safe environment, it isn't always a safe environment," said Giannini.
In the second instance Strohminger took another set of keys and approached the vehicle but was caught by the victim and a supervisor from the YMCA.
Strohminger is charged with two counts of Petit Theft, one count of Burglary and one count of Attempted Burglary.
Strohminger had been out of jail on bond following his arrest in February on five cases of dealing in stolen property and providing false ownership information to a pawn dealer. He has already been released on bond on this week's charges.
The sheriff's office strongly recommends that patrons of all local gyms retain possession of their keys or properly secure them at all times. Staff members at the YMCA have moved the key rack to an area that only staff members can access.
