SARASOTA - Two Suncoast pups were recognized in Orlando recently for their actions that may have saved their owner's life.

Joanne Stout's two dogs, "Daisey" and "Truffles", woke her up in the middle of the night last December and were so persistent that she had to get out of bed to see what was going on.

It was then that she realized her leg was bleeding profusely from a ruptured blood vessel and the dogs were alerting her. “I was sound asleep with Daisey and Truffles beside me. They were nervous that evening; breathing heavy and pacing back and forth. Sometime during the night, they began to really fuss. With them off and on the bed and panting heavily, I suddenly woke up. As I pulled the covers back, there was blood saturated on the bed. I noticed that the blood was squirting from a vein in my ankle,” said Stout.

Responding paramedics later attested that had the dogs not woken Stout up, she would have likely bled to death.

Daisey, a 13-year-old Bichon, and Truffles, a 6-year-old Havanese, were awarded the 2013 Pet Hero award from the Florida Veterinary Medical Association last month.

Mrs. Stout was not able to travel with Daisey and Truffles to the ceremony due to a recent illness. Dr. Janet Whitlock, who owns Beneva Animal Hospital and nominated the Stouts for the prestigious award and recognition, accepted on their behalf and made a presentation to Mrs. Stout, Daisey and Truffles in Sarasota following the conference.
