Tuskegee Airman honored on Veterans Day

SARASOTA - The sacrifice of veterans was recognized at a ceremony in Sarasota as a member of a squadron of black pilots is honored for his service.

Retired Lieutenant Colonel George Hardy was the youngest member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen.

It was only because of segregation at the time that the all-black fighter group even existed, and though he flew combat missions over Germany during World War II, Hardy could not count on a hero's welcome everywhere when he got home.

But times have changed, and he believes Veterans Day now honors all who have served. "It should be a day when people put out their flags and sort of realize how fortunate they are to be in a country like this."

Hardy also served in Korea and Vietnam and flew more than 100 combat missions.
