LONGBOAT KEY, Fla. -- Beachgoers Thursday night got to see a special sight, when Longboat Key Turtle Watch volunteers excavated a turtle nest.

One lucky loggerhead hatchling got a new chance at life. He was still in the nest alive and in good health. He was released, along with several other hatchlings.

The turtle watch excavated the nest to see how many eggs hatched from it.

They used the moment to educate the crowd and show them just how important it is that they keep the lights off the beach.

Hatchlings like these follow the light of the sun and are easily confused by other ambient light.
