BRADENTON, Fla.. - A 3-year-old boy is recovering from a gunshot wound in Manatee County.
It was in a Bradenton driveway late Monday night that authorities say 3-year-old Kevin Davis, Jr. shot himself in the knee. Investigators know the boy was outside and alone, but how he got the gun and whose it was remains a mystery.
It happened Monday around 11pm in the 600 block of 61st Ave.
"It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense, that a three year old wanders outside, comes upon a firearm, and shoots himself," said Manatee County Sheriff Spokesman Dave Bristow. "That doesn't make sense."
Investigators say the child's mother and five others, who were inside when the gun went off, are sticking to their stories.
"Everyone that was in the house is saying that they have no idea who the gun belongs to or where the gun came from," said Bristow.
Neighbors, some who are parents themselves, say they're not surprised somebody got hurt. "It's a bad neighborhood, its just not the best," said Ashley Kennedy, who, with her family, live next door to where the shooting happened. She wonders what kind of a parent lets their kid outside here late at night.
"What kind of parent would let their kid out there like that, if they do then they shouldn't even have a kid," said Kennedy.
Investigators say tracing a gun's owner can be a challenge, and if those who were there when the gun went off aren't more forthcoming, the case could end up cold. "It could be a case where we're not able to prove something, theres no question about that, but we're going to do the best we can to find out where that gun came from and who owned that gun," said Bristow.
The boy was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital, then to All Children’s Hospital for follow up and is expected to fully recover.
The investigation continues and, at this time, no one has been charged.
