CUTTIN’ THE FAT: Just Enough in Your Pantry, Fridge ‘n Freezer

As I mentioned earlier in the week, January is National Organizing Month, so today I’m continuing in the kitchen by cutting the fat and clutter in the spots we store and keep them -- like our drawers, cupboards, fridge and freezer. So get that garbage bag or trash can out and get ready to chuck stuff that has seen their 'best use by' days.


A few tips to maintain freshness longer:

• Keep in coolest places away from fridge, stove, dishwasher, water heater and pipes.

• Under sink is a no-no for potatoes and onions!

• Store in airtight plastic containers

• Refrigerating MAY prolong shelf life

• Cereal

  • Unopened: 6-12 months
  • Opened: 2-3 months

• Pasta: 1-2yrs

• White Rice:  2 years

• Flour: 6-8 month

• Oil

  • Unopened: 18 months
  • Opened: 6-8 months

• Peanut Butter

  • Unopened: 6-9 months
  • Opened: 2-3 months

• Chocolate syrup:

  • Unopened 2 years
  • Opened 6 months


• Ice Cream: 1-2months

• Fresh Frozen Steak, chops & chicken pieces: 6-9 months

  • Put dates on items and freeze pronto if not going to use in 1-2 days
  • Wrap in moisture and vapor proof bags or paper (ask your butcher to wrap!)


• Butter

  • Fridge 2-3 weeks
  • Freezer; 6-9 months

• Mayo: Opened or unopened: 3-4 months

• Parmesan

  • Unopened: 10 months
  • Opened: 2-4 months

• Mustard

  • Unopened: 2 years
  • Opened: 6-8 months

• Eggs: Do the Sink or swim test:

  1. Fill a bowl with enough water to cover eggs.
  2. Carefully place eggs in the bowl.
  3. If your eggs float, you’re going out for breaky
  4. If they sink get ready to cook ‘um up!
