Teen hit by minivan in Sarasota, seriously injured

SARASOTA, Fla. - A Massachusetts 13-year-old was flown to the hospital Monday when he was hit by a minivan as he crossed Tamiami Trail.

It happened around 11:50pm near Sarasota Square Mall.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, 13-year-old Joseph Viscione of Burlington, Massachusetts was standing in the grass median of Tamiami Trail and attempted to cross the northbound lanes just south of the intersection of Beneva Road.

As he entered the northbound right turn lane, he was hit by a minivan driven by 82-year-old Paul Debbane of Sarasota.

Viscione was flown by helicopter to the hospital for treatment to serious injuries.

No charges have been filed against the driver.
