Target breach bigger than previously thought

SARASOTA, Fla. - We're learning that more information than first thought was compromised in the recent cyber breach at Target stores.   A forensic investigation shows that the impacts nearly double to 70 million customer effected, that's 30 million more than previous estimates and a drastic increase in the number of people having to worry about who may have access to their personal and financial information.

"Its definately a headache," said Susan Connelly, who is among the millions who shopped at Target during the 19 days in late November and early December when the company says there was unauthorized access to their payment card database.

"We've had a number of these security breaches.  And while they do handle it, it's a headache because you have to further track your finances and keep an eye on what your doing and make sure your not a target," said Connelly.

According to the investigation, hackers got more than first thought, gaining access to names, addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses and card information for 70 million people.  News that has put many shoppers on edge.

"Its actually made me pretty nervous.  We actually ended up switching banks because of it and we've pretty much changed out spending habits to try to carry cash instead," said Tamika Detwiler.

But not everyone is concerned.

"I really haven't thought about it.  I'm assuming somebody will contact me, I've looked at my bank account but again Im not that worried about it," said Tracy Alger.

John Favara agrees. "I'm not worried. I think that they're doing everything possible to make sure that we're taking care of and that we don't have any unnecessary expense. " added Favara as he walked out of the Target in Lakewood Ranch.

And that's exactly the message Target is trying to put out.  The company says much of the personal data taken is partial in nature, but in cases where account numbers and email addresses were included, they will attempt to contact those affected to inform them of tips to guard against consumer scams.  

In a statement on their website, Target assured that guests will have zero liability for the cost of any fraudulent charges arising from the breach.  And, they are also providing free credit monitoring and identity theft protection for all guests.
