SARASOTA - The man accused of shooting two people in Newtown Tuesday night peacefully turned himself in to Sarasota Police Thursday.  39-year-old Joseph Lamar will be charged with Attempted Murder and Aggravated Battery with a Firearm.

Police say Lamar shot two people around 10:18pm Tuesday near the intersection of Lemon Avenue and 32nd Street.  he is a convicted murderer who was released from prison last year.

Lamar arrived at Sarasota Police headquarters around 5pm Thursday, accompanied by Reverend Kelvin Lumpkin, Trevor Harvey, and Leslie Williams.  He was met by Chief Bernadette DiPino and Capt. Bonner and taken into custody without incident.

Police say the meeting had been arranged thanks to the collaborative efforts of Chief DiPino, Lamar’s family, and the community leaders.

The investigation is continuing.
