Suspect arrested in cab driver robbery

SARASOTA, FL. – Police make an arrest after a cab driver is robbed at gunpoint.

At approximately 3:20 a.m. on February 11, an Armed Robbery occurred near the intersection of 12th Street and Cocoanut Avenue.

The victim, a cab driver, advised that he picked up a fare at La Quinta Inn, 1803 N. Tamiami Trail. The perpetrator entered the cab and sat in the backseat directly behind the cab driver.

The perpetrator directed the victim to drive to the area of 12th Street and Cocoanut Avenue. As the victim was driving, the perpetrator leaned towards the front seat, stuck a gun against the victim’s side and demanded money. The victim pulled out cash and handed it over to the perpetrator. The perpetrator grabbed the cash, exited the cab, and fled the scene walking northbound on Cocoanut Avenue.

Sarasota Police Officer Nelson and Officer Jaimes arrived on the scene within a minute of being dispatched. Officer Vance and Officer Holcomb checked the area and quickly located a subject at 1341 14th Street that matched the description of the perpetrator. The person located by the officers is James B. Brown. Officers drove the victim to 14th Street and the victim positively identified James B. Brown as the fare he had picked up at La Quinta that had just robbed him. James B. Brown was arrested approximately 4-minutes after the robbery was dispatched.

Officers then re-traced the steps of where the victim had seen the perpetrator walk after the robbery. Officer Holcomb located a firearm on the roof of 1267 14th Street. Officer Vance and Officer Holcomb located loose cash on the roof and the back yard of 1341 14th Street, where they had located James B. Brown.

James B. Brown, was arrested for Robbery with a Firearm. He remains in Sarasota County Jail on $100,000 bond.

This is the 4th time that Sarasota Police Officers have arrested Brown for Robbery. Brown was convicted of the previous 3 robberies (two occurred in 2005 and one in 2004). He was sentenced to five years in prison for the previous robberies. All three previous robberies were also robberies with victims that were cab drivers.
